Ukraine: A Home at Last

Natalia and Sergei are both in wheelchairs. Together with their daughter, they lived for years under unimaginable conditions during the war. They took refuge in a cellar, without electricity, constantly living in fear of bombs, missiles, and drones. Eventually, they lost their home as well and were literally left on the street. Although they found temporary shelter in an empty flat, they had to leave again when it was due to be sold.

Then God intervened in a special way. A supporter bought a badly damaged flat for the family. Members of our partner church renovated it with great dedication and made it as wheelchair-accessible as possible. The conditions are basic, but the flat finally offers the family a safe home.

During our visit, one thing impressed us above all else: the smiles on both their faces. Natalia and Sergej have welcomed Jesus Christ into their lives. The hope they once lacked is plain to see on their faces. Their small flat is decorated with flowers and plants, which bring Natalia joy every day. Even their cat and their bird contribute to the cheerful atmosphere. As we prayed together, the bird began to whistle loudly, almost as if it wanted to join in the prayer.

We were also able to send two wheelchairs from Switzerland, which make the family's daily life considerably easier. Although the flat's doorways are narrow, the wheelchairs fit through. Their daughter can also go back to school and experience a sense of normality. Fear has turned to hope, homelessness to a home, and despair to confidence. For this, we are truly grateful.
